Google – The Ultimate Truth in Advertising
May 28th
As Google continues to grow and figure out how to provide the most relevant content to users, “truth in advertisement” becomes increasingly important.
As many may already know, Google is a search engine that doesn’t make money directly from search inquirers – it is free to use after all! Google’s primary method of earning money is by selling advertising on the internet based on the search term users type in. For Google to keep users coming back time and time again to click on the ads that make them money, it is in Google’s best interest to ensure that an ad matches the content of the website it is directed towards.
In the wild west days of the internet and Google, there were very few rules in place to ensure search result displayed the information requested. In fact, a website that sold motorcycles could manipulate their page in way that when a user searched for “car” or “truck”, they could end up on the motorcycle site. Now, if you were the person looking for a car and ended up on a motorcycle site, you may not want to use that search engine again.
Google has been leading the way in providing users relevant search information and strives to find websites that would be successful even if Google wasn’t around. Today, webmasters and advertisers must play by a long list of rules to ensure that the content on their page is relevant and not a fly-by-night website out to spam you. These increasingly stricter rules not only weed out less credible websites, but make it more difficult for new and small business website to receive good ranking by Google.
In order for a website to rank well and show on the first page of Google, the site must be optimized to Google’s liking. In the past, a webmaster would be responsible for optimizing the page. Today’s webmasters and finding it difficult to keep up with all the new technologies and software that goes into making a website that many choose to work with a Search Engine Optimization (SEO) specialist to ensure the page is ranked well with Google.
As Google continues to refine and demand that website meet their level of truth in advertising, it will become increasingly important to play by their rules. This will benefit all Google users and places an emphasis on business owners to outsource a SEO specialist to ensure the visibility of their site online.
