Video Marketing Santa RosaSince online video marketing is one of the best new ways to create better brand awareness and improve SEO, the biggest mistake you as a business can make in terms of online video marketing is not making videos at all. However, if you are already part of this growing trend, then there are a few common mistakes which you should try to avoid.

Uploading One Video Only

One big mistake is getting really excited about the idea of online video marketing, taking your time to create one great video … and then not doing it again. The world of video marketing revolves around constant creation, and the only way to make an impact is to regularly release content. This is the way to finding and keeping an audience.

On the other hand, don’t become discouraged if you publish numerous videos and still aren’t seeing the results you expected. Views and audiences will build over time, so don’t obsess over the stats too much in the beginning.

Focusing on High Quality Equipment

While it is true that you need top-notch content and ideas to explore to be successful, the equipment necessary to capture and release your videos does not need to be expensive or top of the line. Make it easy on yourself in the beginning, and then move forward from there. There’s no shame in getting started with only an iPhone or simple camcorder. I’m currently shooting videos for myself and clients on my Samsung Galaxy S4 with great results in a well lit studio set-up. However, be sure to invest in a decent microphone such as the Audio-Technica ATR-3350 so that your audience can hear you clearly while minimizing background noise. If you plan on plugging a microphone into your smart phone, you’ll need to get an adapter like the one I picked up at kV Connections.

Making Videos Too Long

Unless you’re doing an intensive step-by-step tutorial, it’s usually better to keep your videos on the shorter side. With the plethora of content and readily-available entertainment on the web, attention spans seem to be getting shorter and shorter. I was told to think about the songs you hear on the radio. How long are they? Typically no longer than 3 minutes. This is about the length of your audience attention span.

Being Overly Promotional (Or Not Promotional Enough)

There’s a fine line between making your brand known to your viewers and stuffing it down their throats like a cheap infomercial. One approach to consider is introduce yourself and your business first, and then focus on being informative and entertaining for the remainder of the video (you can even create a catchy sign off, if that’s your thing). Please DON’T SELL! Educate your audience and they’ll respect you more.

Having No Clear Target Audience

You should have a good idea of what your target audience is before getting too far into online video marketing so that you don’t spread yourself too thin by trying to cater to too many demographics. Keep them in mind when exploring ideas and finalizing your message, and be sure to keep your own personality in mind when attempting to discover your true video persona.

Failing to Optimize Your Videos

Employing good SEO tactics on YouTube and beyond is the best way to get your videos seen by the masses. Things such as a good title, good descriptive keywords, and appropriate tags will help drive in more traffic.

Avoiding these common mistakes will undoubtedly increase your chances at online video marketing success. Moreover, it’s a good idea to do your homework to see what works for others—and what doesn’t. This way you’ll get a feel for what to use in your own videos.
