Hey there, Internet fans, it’s Ryan Perry with Simple Biz Support. Today, I would like to talk about Google Places. Google Places is one of the great tools for any SEO, especially local business, because it gets you plugged directly into Google’s database. What you want to do is at the toolbar, just go to the google.com and you’ll see they have Business/Places for business, but if you just go to the google.com/places, it’ll automatically take you to the Google Places homepage. When you’re ready, go ahead and click on the ‘Get started for free’. You’ll need to login, if you’re not already logged in. In this case, I’ve already logged in, and you can see it’s just going to start asking for basic company information. So, I’m going to start typing this in for a new client.

Here we are, I’ve gone in and filled out the client’s information. One of the key things is the database that Google creates, everything is based on a phone number. So, you need to have a unique phone number. If you’re a business and you’re sharing the same phone number, you probably gonna have some issues getting a Google Places account set up simply because Google’s gonna recognize that there is already an account set up. The other thing you want to do is make sure you select the most appropriate category. In some cases, it may not be the exact category that your business is in, but you do want to find a category that is most relevant. And then, also this little check box down here, that ‘My business has a service area’, is also very important because if you’re somebody that does deliveries, that goes out to clients, maybe you’re a contractor and you physically go out, what you’ll wanna do is state your delivery area. And you can do that within x number of miles of your business or you can just do it by zip code or by city. If you are a business that is online or you can service people across the nation, you wanna leave this unchecked. If you are a local business, I recommend checking that.

Google PlacesGo ahead and submit it and what Google’s now doing is they’ve gone out, they’ve put the phone number, they’ve checked it against their database and they’re going, “Hey, is there any other businesses?” If you have multiple businesses that pop up, maybe you’ve already created an account and didn’t know it, or maybe a prior owner did, all of those will show up in here. It’s really important for Google’s point of view that you only have one business. If you do have multiple businesses, you’ll want to claim all of those and make sure you delete them, so that, ultimately you only end up with one. That way there isn’t any misguided information, if there’s only one business with one database then, it’s really clear that this is a good phone number.

The next thing you’ll be able to do is get a verification. The quickest and easiest way is click here and verify by phone and what’ll happen is Google will send an automatic voicemail out. You’ll receive the phone call, they’ll give you, I believe it’s a five or a six digit pin number, you want to write that down and then, if you click here, It’ll take you to a screen where you can put that verification code in and then, we can continue on. If you are not able to answer by phone, then we’re gonna verify by postcard and click here. What they’ll do is, they’ll actually mail you a postcard.

Alright. So, I was able to get that verification code from Google over the phone. So, once I punched it in, I click ‘Okay’ and now we have our own Google Places listing. Now, what’s nice about this is we have the basic information and all we need to do now is fill in some of the additional information. One of the key ones is the website and there’s gonna be some background information, add a photo. One of the really cool things I like about this process now is that you actually get to connect your Google Places right here. And why that’s needed for those of you who have had a separate Google Places account and a Google+ page account for your business, getting those two to actually connect together has been a real issue. Now, it’s a real simple process. Unfortunately, it’s for new businesses, when you’re creating a new account with Google+ and Google Places, it’s all connected.
