internet marketing farmingWhen it comes to marketing a small business, it is often difficult for owners to let immediate comparisons between what they spend and what they make.

Yes, this is an important number. Getting positive returns on investments is a key element for building a successful business and a factor that always needs to be evaluated carefully. The problem is that sometimes returns are not immediate.

That is especially true in today’s Internet marketing environment. In a recent article at Marketing Profs, writer Beth McCray made an apt comparison. She said marketers could take a valuable lesson from farmers. She writes:

Marketing is a game of seasons and cycles. We deal with ups and downs, timing, and patience. It’s a lot like farming, actually. Farmers have to deal with seasons, and so do you.”

She offered her “Reaping Rules” and two summarize the process perfectly.

  • “You reap what you sow.”
  • “You reap more than you sow.”

A small business owner applying this thinking can successfully navigate the shifting sands of internet marketing.

The first rule is easy enough. To get any benefits, a business owner must get in the game. They have to put a marketing plan in place and stick with it. They have to actively be engaged in the process.

If a business marketing plan is put in place and managed well, the business has sown the seeds that can later produce results. By actively working that plan, the business owner emulates a farmer applying the fertilizers, water and weed and pest control that will help the crop thrive.

A solid digital marketing plans needs good basics or soil, the infrastructure that will be used. It needs fertilizer, good content. It needs water, a constant refreshing that spreads the fertilizer and keeps the soil inviting. It needs pest control, active engagement that encourages positive interaction and addresses negative situations in a positive way.

The second rule is the definition of marketing success, a positive return on investment. When a marketing plan is properly maintained, its potential for producing results is sustained over time and provide potential for solid returns far beyond the original investment.

Internet marketing is about establishing contacts, developing relationships and getting people to see, learn about and engage with your business. If you plant the right seeds, nourish and care for them, you can see success.
