3 Must-Have Character Traits You Must possess To Work From Home
Mar 20th
Character Traits You Need For a Home Business
1.)Organization – Running an MLM presents a whole lot of obstacles that you wouldn’t necessarily have if you were in a corporate office setting.
First, your actual physical desk space or office area. Make sure you have a committed place to do your business, where you can go to get away and have some privacy. Keep everything in it’s own place. Keep your paper files carefully organized in a filing cabinet, and make sure you keep everything clearly labeled. Keep your notebook free from clutter by removing icons that you do not use daily or weekly into a sub folder. Clean up your internet favorites directory so that all the webpages you use can be very easily located with 2-3 short points & clicks of your mouse. Make sure office space is free from distractions from anyone else you live with, spouse, children, or flatmates. The best choice would be to change one bedroom into your office area, since it would have a door that you could close to be alone. If that is not feasible, at least locate a place that is away from the activity of the main living areas…away from the kitchen, away from the HDTV, and away from where the kids play. A dining room table may work well. When I was visiting someone over the holidays, I set up my office work space on their ironing board in their basement!
If you have young kids like I do, make sure you set clear expectations so that when you’re in your office with the door closed, that they know that you are working and don’t want to be disturbed. One caveat here – I’ve always told my kids that if my door is shut and they just want a hug or kiss, that is fine! Just come on in and there is little more important than that! If you’re on the telephone for business and your children wants a hug, don’t apologize to the person on the phone, just tell them that it is part of the perks of working at home and that you’re not some corporate-type person who only sees their children for an hour in the evening before bedtime. They will respect that.
2.)Discipline – You must create a DMO – or Daily Method of Operation. Essentially that is a schedule that you’ll keep on the days that you’re doing business. Make it detailed. Schedule out when you’re starting your day, eating, taking a breather, making phone calls, doing advertising, educating yourself, attending conference calls, doing administrative duties, going to the bank/post office, shopping online, etc. Working from home makes you very vulnerable to distractions. By having a DMO in place and sticking to it, it will lessen the chance for you to waste time when you could be making profit. Working at home offers you the flexibility to take breaks or spend time with your wife when YOU want to, not when a managertells you that you can. Make sure to plan time in there for family time, quiet reading time, resting, trips to the park, spending quality time with your kids, making breakfast for the kids, or even time with your spouse during the afternoon with the door locked. You got into business for yourself from home for these advantages, make sure you take advantage of them. Work when you’re working and play when you’re playing.
3.)Focus – Working for yourself from home will cause you to have many responsibilities. One second you’ll be a advertiser, the next a customer service rep, the next a sales representative, the next a student, the next a admin assistant. You’ll basically have to do everything. Just promise me that you focus on one thing at a time and never try to do multiple tasks at once. Multitasking really makes you LESS effective, because the human brain can actually only focus on one thing at a time and still be 100% focused on that one thing. You’re brain cannot be 50/50 focused evenly on 2 things. One of them will get less attention and you’ll most likely lose time. Compartmentalize your tasks, focusing completely on one thing until you get to the end and then picking up the next job. It may help to have a daily checklist of tasks you need to accomplish that would work in nicely to your DMO.
Keeping everything in mind that I have reported on, just because you work from home does not mean that you always have to WORK FROM YOUR ACTUAL HOME! Let me describe. Some of my most productive time has been when I take my notebook and wifi and head out to the park and work on a bench out in nature for a few hours, or getting a table at a coffee shop or Panera Bread. Most people in business will greatly benefit by using a smart phone, which will allow you to send and receive emails on the go, change your Facebook Profile, Twitter profile, and other social networking webpages. Don’t feel like you have to be stuck in your home office, get out about 2-3 times per week to give yourself a change of scenery. It will give you inspiration and get you out in public interacting with others. Go somewhere that will cause you to be operating in a energy and mindset that can be put out over the phone to those you may speak with while you’re out. What is FREEDOM all about if you’re still trapped in an office all day, even if it is inside your own home?

Dec 27th
We will now discuss the positive motivating factors, and I am going to assume that you have read my previous article (‘Part 1′), which deals with the negative motivational issues. The positive motivators ‘pull towards’, while the negative factors ‘push away from’. If we can get them to act in unison, so much the better!
Lou Tice, founder of the Pacific Institute, once related the story of how he had to assist a top African athlete to overcome a physical problem. Although this guy was a candidate for the Olympic Games, he often developed a pain in his side so bad that he had to stop running. After listening to the athlete’s story, Tice’s advice was to quit running altogether. You see, Tice found that the athlete could support his family with the proceeds from his wins, and that was his main motivator. According to Tice it was simply not a good enough motivation for such a lofty goal.
Nobody, but nobody on this planet has ever become good at anything overnight. I think the media are guilty of creating the wrong impression here. They present an incorrect timeline by (inadvertently) depicting the change from loser to winner, from obscurity to stardom, in a few episodes on TV or within the duration of a single movie.
In the real world the ‘instant success’ is more often than not preceded by years, even decades, of practice, hardships and disappointments. This is applicable basically to any field of endeavor. So, on your way to becoming that marketing ‘superhero’, you are going to meet with countless distractions and obstacles. There will be days when you wonder if it’s worth all the effort, and you will consider quitting on many occasions.
In view of this, you should ensure that your reasons for doing someting are so good that they outweigh any setbacks. To excel at anything, be that athletics, art, gardening, or network marketing, you have to be persistent. And for that you need an intense level of motivation, preferably of the positive kind! So how do you get this?
The pieces of the puzzle will come together if you can get yourself to a position of ‘must’ have. You must have no option but to achieve that goal. And you create this situation by having enough magnificent ‘why’s. The more you have, and the more they pull you in the same direction, the better. What I mean by magnificence is that the end result must really resonate within you at a gut level. It must be able evoke an intense emotional response. Sweaty skin. Increased pulse rate. Pupils dilated.
Now I cannot tell you what your motivators are; you will have to do a fair amount of introspection. Draw up a ‘wish list’, and order the items with the most desirable one at the top. Then look at the ones at the top. If they evoke that magic euphoric response, if you must realize them at all cost, come hell or high water, despite all odds, you are on the right track. Only 9/10? Hmm – not so good.
At this point I’d like to introduce some perspective. This series of articles deals mostly with money. Money is VERY important. But so is health, friendship and peace of mind, for example. The bottom line is this: you cannot have anything if it’s not important to you. So if someone tries to tell you money is not important, don’t believe her – she’s broke.
Network marketing success and the money associated with it is not the ultimate goal. But some of the things you can do with that money – wow! So when (not ‘if’) you become that marketing superstar, and you do break through the million-dollar-a-year ceiling – what will your life look like? Your lifestyle? The people that you hang out with? Your toys? Your appearance? The hospital in Africa you will be sponsoring? This is the time to get super-creative!
Join me in my next article where I’ll show you how you can re-program your own mind to pursue your goals. And no, it’s not the boring goal setting nonsense.
